Static Electricity Macro Photography : In December of 2012 while being repeatedly zapped by static electricity when reaching for a doorknob, I was reminded of an exercise from three years prior by legendary photographer Mike Hollingshead. Setting out to try and capture this phenomena on my own using the reverse ring macro shooting technique, over the next few weeks when time allowed, I would find myself on an entertaining path of experimentation and discovery. Camera settings ranged from 800 to 1600 ISO with F stops generally bouncing between 3.5 and 5.6. Later sessions would require much slower settings due to the level of intensity. In all of the shots, the gap distance between contacts and the activity occurring was no greater than 1/8th of an inch. The slightest increase in distance between contacts would render the attempt null as it would be too far for the discharge to travel. Comparable to long exposure or even lightning photography, try it for yourself!

September 5, 2012 - Morning Arcus Cloud Over Central Illinois USA : On the morning of Wednesday September 5th, we were treated to an amazing sight being the passage of multiple arcus clouds that formed as result of collapsing storms entering the state from Iowa. This phenomena is not uncommon, however, to have limited cloud cover in advance of this feature with a sun angle enabling it to be illuminated from the front is unique. The timing was fortunately perfect in that I witnessed this event while heading home through the country.
